Rio Chucunaque Subproject

This site was a large family-owned cattle farm situated along the Chucunaque River, north of the Pan-American highway.  The property backed up directly to a large tract of mature native forest, and a large portion of the property near the river was still covered in mature intact forest.  We placed five cameras in this forest, and five cameras in the cattle fields.

The forest normally floods during the rainy season when the Chucunaque swells, so we placed cameras higher on the trees than usual (belt height rather than knee height) and angled them downward towards bait cans.

While deploying the cameras, we observed evidence of several species that are not typically found on disturbed or heavily poached sites, including jaguars (footprints), white-lipped peccaries (footprints), and great curassow (direct observation).  The landowner also reported having seen jaguars, ocelots, puma, jaguarundi, and crab-eating foxes on the site in the past.
