TNC Virginia Coast Reserve
For over 50 years, The Nature Conservancy has worked in Virginia to protect our forests and woodlands, rivers and bays, ocean and coasts. Working together with Federal, state and local partners, the Conservancy has helped to protect over 340,000 acres of private and public land across the commonwealth, preserving many of Virginia’s greatest ecological treasures and the natural benefits they provide. The Nature Conservancy seeks creative and lasting solutions to Virginia’s conservation challenges, grounded not only on the best available science, but also on the common understanding of the need to protect our most special places for ourselves and for future generations. The Virginia Coast Reserve, headquartered in Nassawadox, VA, has protected over 40,000 acres of vital habitat including barrier islands, marshes, and coastal uplands on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The eMammal project will provide valuable data for habitat management as well as provide hands-on learning opportunities for Eastern Shore students and educators by using real-world field data collection and classroom analysis opportunities.
