Subproject for camera traps run within the Black Rock Forest boundaries.

All cameras were located within a forest (typically hardwood or mixed), with cameras mounted ~0.5 meters above ground facing bait attached ~2 meters above ground via plastic mesh to an adjacent tree ~5 - 8 meters away.

We are surveying the local carnivore community to understand species presence and distribution, with the goal of guiding connectivity and other conservation strategies.

The UCSB-Smithsonian Scholars, with the help of The Nature Conservancy and the UC Santa Cruz Island Reserve, will monitor and identify individual skunks to estimate the population size of the endemic island spotted skunk (Spilogale gracilis amphiala) on Santa Cruz Island.
